Shon’s practice focuses primarily on civil litigation, including construction litigation, real estate, bodily injury, and creditors’ rights.  Shon has successfully tried several jury and bench trials in northeast Kansas counties.  He also advises businesses on employment matters, as well as contractual and other commercial issues. 

Shon has dealt with a variety of complex governmental legal issues, including the constitutionality of state legislation; federal preemption of state regulations; qualified governmental immunity for private actors; governmental immunity in the context of premises liability; and administrative appeals under the Kansas Administrative Procedures Act.
Shon is a graduate of South Dakota State University (B.S. 1993) and the University of Kansas School of Law (J.D. 1997).  He is admitted to the Kansas Bar, and to practice in the U.S. District Court of Kansas, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States.  At KU, Shon was a staff member for theKansas Journal of Law & Public Policy in 1995-96 and an editor in 1996-97.  Shon served two terms on the Board of Directors of the Kansas Association of Defense Counsel, and he is a member of the Judge Hugh Means American Inn of Court and the Defense Research Institute.  Shon served one term as a lawyer member of the Seventh Judicial District Nominating Commission, and currently serves on the Douglas County Ethics and Grievance Committee.  In 2009-2015, Shon was an adjunct professor for a class on deposition skills at the University of Kansas School of Law.  Shon taught Continuing Legal Education sessions on special trial skills for younger lawyers at the Annual Conference of the Kansas Association of Defense Counsel (December, 2011; and December, 2012).  He was also a presenter of a CLE program in Topeka, “Putting Together a Powerful Closing Argument,” (June, 2014); a presenter of a CLE program for the Douglas County Bar Association, “Facebook Ethics,” (September, 2010); and a presenter for a community education program at the Lawrence Public Library: “My Child Just Got A Driver’s License ... Now What? Legal Concerns For New Drivers and Their Parents,” (June, 2005; and June, 2006).  Shon authored Your House Is My Castle – Or Is It?  A Guide To Housing Discrimination Law, Kansas Defense Journal (Fall 2007).  Shon has volunteered for the Douglas County United Way Campaign, served on the Grant Review Board for the City of Lawrence, and is a past President of Lawrence Central Rotary.
